Old Man and the Beginning of the World
Bodmer, Karl. “Blackfeet Warrior.” 11october2008. Painting. Spartacus.schoolnet. November 11, 2008.
The Old Man was traveling north from the south. During his travels he created mountains,
prairies, forests and animals. The Old Man tripped over a knoll and he fell to his knees. As a
result from tripping he raised up two large buttes where his knees had met the ground and
named the two buttes "Knees." The Old Man wanted the animals to have food, for this reason he
filled the plains with grass. Meanwhile, he created a Bighorn sheep and placed it in the prairie.
The sheep didn't seem to belong; therefore he placed the sheep in the mountains. He created
and moved the antelope in the same way. Although the Old Man was creating animals, he was
lonely. So he created a woman along with a boy and taught them how to survive. As a result the
woman and the boy learned how to walk, eat, sleep, make medicine, make weapons, start fires,
and how to make dishes out of hard stones.
